The Washington Traffic Safety Commission funded more than 25 extra patrols over the holiday season, including the “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed” campaign in Kings County. These patrols were created to specifically look for people who had too much holiday fun, traveling from office Christmas parties, Christmas functions and family get-togethers.
More than 3,577 alleged drunk drivers were arrested between November 25 and January 2nd. 876 of these arrests were in King’s County alone.
Unfortunately only the 2009 year DUI statistics are available now. They show a reduction of 9 percent in vehicle homicides that were alcohol related over the last five years. Many variables are unknowable and in dispute so don’t give too much weight to the conclusions drawn by the government here. the five-year average.
One of the more serious DUI accidents that occurred over the holidays involved 35-year-old Lagrant Darnel Pegram. Pregram allegedly ran a red light and collided with 21 year old, Emmanuel Franco. Franco was killed in the accident. Pegram’s alleged blood alcohol at the time was .24, three times the legal limit.
Pegram is believed to have previous convictions for both vehicular assault and drunk driving. He has been charged with vehicle homicide, and remains in jail.
